Pinewood Derby

The Pinewood Derby is an annual racing event for Cub Scouts. Scouts, with the help of parents or mentors, build small cars from wood, usually from kits containing a block of pine wood, plastic wheels, and metal axles. The cars are typically carved, sanded, and painted to the scouts’ specifications and then raced down a specially designed track with a laser timer.

Key aspects of the Pinewood Derby include:

  1. Design and Creativity: Participants can design and decorate their cars in various ways, often incorporating unique themes and styles.

  2. Construction: The cars must adhere to specific guidelines regarding size, weight, and materials to ensure fair competition.

  3. Racing: Cars race down a sloped track powered only by gravity. The track usually has multiple lanes, and cars compete in heats to determine the fastest.

  4. Sportsmanship and Fun: While the competition can be intense, the emphasis is on having fun, learning new skills, and demonstrating good sportsmanship.

The Pinewood Derby is a tradition in scouting, aiming to teach young participants about craftsmanship, engineering, and fair play.
